MYTHS
MYTH - ANTIOXIDENTS
REVERSE WRINKLES
Free
radicals, the molecules created by sunlight, alcohol, smoking,
pollution and stress, play a large role in creating wrinkles. So it
is easy to think that antioidants, which fight free radicals, will
make skin more youthful, but experts are yet to find which creams can
make a difference to wrinkles - they instead help to prevent the free
radical damage and premature aging.
MYTH - MOST SKIN DAMAGE
HAPPENS TO YOUR SKIN BEFORE THE AGE 18
Some beauty
experts have claimed that by the time your 18 your skin has built up
more protective melanocyte pigments, making the sun's effects less
damaging. But recent studies have shown that by the age 18, you've
only accumulated 20% of the sun damage that you will incur over a
lifetime.
MYTH - YOUR SKIN WILL
AGE LIKE YOUR MOTHERS
Genetics do
play an important part in how your skin looks from the size of your
pores to its texture and colou. But when it comes to aging lifestyle
habits matter more than genetics. The biggest culprits are sun
exposure, excess alcohol, smoking, stress and lack of sleep.
MYTH - STRESS WONT
AFFECT YOUR SKIN
Stress
weakens the skin's outer barrier by diverting blood to other vital
organs. This leaves skin more susceptible to damage and slows cell
turnover which makes your complexion look dull. Also, when your under
stress, your body produces stress hormones which stimulate an
overproduction of oil in the skin. The excess oil mixes with the dead
skin cells and causes blemishes.
MYTH - THE RIGHT
MOISTURISER SHOULD SINK INTO YOUR SKIN
The moisture
in moisturiser doesn't sink into the skin like a sponge. Only some of
the moisture is absorbed and most should sit on the surface and
prevent water loss by improving elasticity and function of the outer
layers of the skin that keep it hydrated. The outer layers of the
skin thin with age, so we need thicker moisturisers to keep skin
hydrated as we get older.
MYTH - REGULAR
EXFOLIATION THINS YOUR SKIN
Rather than
thinning your skin, exfoliation has been shown to thicken the dermis
(layer of skin) by stimulating cell renewal and encouraging more
cells to grow. This increases production of collagen, which gives
skin a younger, fresher and more hydrated look.
MYTH - ADULT SKIN SHOULD
NOT GET SPOTS
Blemishes
are caused when hair follicles attached to the skin's sebaceous
glands clog with oil and dead skin cells. This can happen at any age
and for any number of reasons - stress, hormonal changes or climate
changes.
