Lipstick vs. Lipgloss... And Keeping It On!

makeup brushesIt is important to know the difference and varieties of products that are available when shopping for lip make-up.

When it comes to making a choice in beautifying one's face, the options can be limitless. Such is the case with lip make-up. When choosing between lipstick and lip gloss, there are a few key things to take into account.

If deep, rich and long-lasting colour is what you are after, than lipstick is the choice for you. Sold in a variety of forms, lipstick is a combination of emollients, such as oil or Vaseline, waxes and pigment. It often includes additional things like aloe vera or vitamins for moisture, sunscreen and an array of chemicals that are for increasing the staying power, enriching the colour or just making that particular brand a more marketable product. More than half of the lipstick in the United States contains castor oil, which forms a shiny film when dry. Castor oil, when consumed in large quantities, can produce illness, but is safe in lipstick.

You can find lipstick in several forms, including stick, cream and gel. Stick, the most well-known, is long-lasting both in the tube and after application. Lots of lipsticks are made with ingredients that make them stay put on lips for long periods of time (e.g. colourstay). These lipsticks may now also include added vitamins and moisturising ingredients to counteract the drying effects of some of the chemicals. Many products also include sun block for protection against harmful rays on your lips.

Cream lipsticks have the benefit of being ultra-moisturising, but can be messy to apply. Using a small lip brush cuts down on mess, but can be tedious and difficult to do on the move. Sometimes it is best to apply a shade in cream form at home and touch up through the day with the stick, which is easy to carry in your purse or pocket.

A great alternative to traditional lipstick, is lip gloss.

Gloss is glamorous, dressy and make your lips look fuller. It is used to give the lips a glossy lustre and it is distributed as a liquid. It comes in different shades of opacity ,that is metallic, frosted and glittery. Instead of using lipsticks, many women prefer using lip glosses. Depending on what you buy and the way you apply it, lip gloss can dress you up for any occasion, be it a formal or a party. Glosses are used directly over the lips for a translucent look, or it can go with a lip pencil or over lipstick. You need to understand what will suit you the most. Some important tips are given below to help you understand what way gloss can help you. Gloss is ultra shiny and highly pigmented, is a convenient wand application, comes in iconic shades and it is ideal alone or over lip colour.

Various Types Of Glosses:

A gloss has a heavy, shiny coverage. If it contains a moisturiser, it is usually Vaseline based so that is the exact feel that you will get. There are many types of glosses available in the market today. At times it does get confusing to choose the right type of gloss which you require. Usually lip glosses contain glycerin, aloe, and vitamin E, which helps to moisturise the lips.

1.  Translucent gloss:

The lightest form of gloss is the translucent type, available in a tube. This form of gloss unfortunately does not have a long lasting effect.

2.  Shimmer glitter gloss: This can be used for formal occasions in an instant.

3.  Coloured gloss:

These are heavier glosses and tend to be very gooey and thick, but they last the longest. The versatility of these glosses gives you enough choice when using them.

4.  Pot gloss:

This is thicker and longer lasting. They have a shinier and fuller effect on the lips. Lip lacquers also have this glazed effect.

How can I keep my Lipstick On?

Step 1
To get the most out of your lipstick it is always best to exfoliate your lips. They are skin too and need to be pampered. This can be done with a designated lip product or with a soft bristle brush. Once you have done this, apply lip balm that does not contain alcohol, since this will just dry your lips out.

Step 2
Apply liquid foundation over your lips and let it set for about 30 seconds. Then line your lips with a lip liner that is close to the colour of lipstick you choose. Start at the "Cupid's bow" on the top lip, directly under your nose. Make a "V" and then line outwards to the edge of your mouth. On the bottom, line directly in the middle of the lip and go out from there.

Step 3

Fill in your lips with the lip liner and then apply your lipstick. Be sure to dab your lipstick to "clean" off excess lipstick. Lightly reapply foundation to you lips.

Step 4

Finally, reapply your lipstick and dab again. At this point you may apply a "dot" of lip gloss to the middle of your lips for the perfect pout as well but do the above steps and your lipstick should last most of the day if not all day long.
